Opening plenary: Adapting to the new retail landscape: Strategies and partnerships for success
Join us for an engaging panel discussion as we explore the rapidly changing landscape of the retail industry. Over the past five years, retail has undergone a staggering transformation, driven by the pandemic and evolving consumer demands. In addition, supply chain disruptions and regulatory developments have further impacted the sector.
Recognising these significant changes, GS1 is rolling out a new retail strategy in 2023, aiming to enhance accessibility and understanding of GS1 standards, and the value they bring to companies addressing emerging and future challenges. Our panel, representing various retail communities, will share their unique perspectives on retail, their business needs, and the vital role GS1 plays in supporting their operations and future adaptability. The session will delve into the industry's transformative forces, discuss the key issues our users face, and explore how GS1 can effectively continue to be an integral part of the global retail ecosystem and local retail communities worldwide.

How RFID can help reduce waste
One area which has great potential to help reduce waste and increase recycling is RFID technology. Together with new EPC encodings introduced in Tag Data Standard (TDS 2.0) RFID can help identify short sell by dates for food products or medications that can be brought forward and sold or used well within those dates. When embedded in packaging, RFID tags can also help deliver clear, localised information about the composition and recyclability. From a supply chain point of view, RFID can help create a more sustainable warehouse by preventing overstocking, minimizing unnecessary labour and reducing inefficient transportation. RFID tags can also serve as a carrier for permanent identity which enables any product to be easily refurbished and re-used.
Join this session to know more about how different sectors like apparel, fresh food and healthcare are already leveraging RFID to reduce waste and achieve sustainability goals.

GSMP Global Product Classification (GPC) Standards Maintenance Group (SMG) (Group members only or by invitation)
The GS1 Global Product Classification (GPC) standard helps global trading partners to group products in the same way, everywhere in the world. The resulting common business language is clear and instantly understandable.
The business benefits of using GPC are: gives buyers and sellers a common language for talking about their products – within countries and regions as well as across the world, improves data accuracy and integrity, speeds up the supply chain responsiveness to consumer needs and simplifies reporting across product categories.
This group will share new implementations of GPC and work on changes and updates to the standard.

GS1 Registries: Opportunities for growth and engagement (MO only)
GS1 fully delivered the Singapore Resolution by successfully building a registries infrastructure that contains Licences, GTINs, GLNs and Links. However, this achievement is only the beginning. With the registries in place, our focus now shifts towards mobilising the GS1 community to grow coverage, relevance and use of the GS1 Registries. Remember that “chicken and egg” problem that everyone has been talking about? We now recognise that data will only be provided into the registries at scale if it is used by industry and government. Therefore, the “solution” to the “chicken-and-egg” problem is to focus our efforts on growing use of the data. In this session, you will learn from GS1 Global Office (GO) and your GS1 Member Organisation (MO) peers, about the use-case driven approach towards more purposeful sector engagement that supports our vision for the GS1 Registries. This vision is to enable users to access one source of trusted data about GS1-issued identity that is enriched with deeper information about products, locations or entities to solve the most pressing industry challenges over time.

Closing the Barcode/RFID interoperability gap with Gen2v3 and TDS 2.1
GS1's recently published EPC Tag Data Standard (TDS) 2.0 and Tag Data Translation Standard (TDT) 2.0 enable the seamless interoperability of EPC/RFID encodings with barcoded GS1 element strings and GS1 Digital Link URIs.
This interoperability will be further enhanced by GS1's forthcoming Gen2v3 UHF standard, which improves RFID performance and simplifies capture of GS1 Application Identifiers on RFID tags, making it easier to find the right products faster.
The comprehensive modernisation of GS1's foundational EPC standards is the result of practical experience gained from over a decade of EPC/RFID deployments by implementers across a wide range of sectors and applications. It will lower adoption hurdles and boost the practical applicability of RFID, as well as underpin the importance of EPC/RFID alongside GS1 barcodes in cohesion with the Global Migration to 2D.

Circularity, Digital Product Passports and GS1 standards: ingredients for a perfect recipe!
The future is data driven, circular and digital for all stakeholders: consumers, regulators, manufacturers, retailers, marketplaces, solution providers and standardisation bodies. The GS1 standards have the potential to enable persistent product identification, decentralised data systems, trustful standardised data, upstream and post sale data access through the new generations of barcodes. GS1 has opened a Mission-specific Working Group (MSWG) on circularity/Digital Product Passports to support some parts of the bigger vision and so this session is going to focus on the bigger picture and provide both policy and technical background to support the standards work.

Playdate in the new EPCIS Sandbox
This session will show you how to begin using GS1's new EPCIS Sandbox to support your EPCIS 2.0 deployment.
The EPCIS Sandbox implements EPCIS-Core Business Vocabulary (CBV) 2.0 and is the next-generation successor to the legacy EPCIS Workbench, which was based on EPCIS 1.2. It has been developed to raise EPCIS/CBV 2.0 awareness and promote best practices for EPCIS 2.0 deployments.
Initial EPCIS Sandbox features include:
- EPCIS 2.0 Event Test Data Generator
- Conversion of EPCIS syntax (XML <-> JSON-LD)
- Conversion of EPCIS version (EPCIS/CBV 1.2<-> EPCIS/CBV 2.x)
- Conversion of EPCIS identifiers (EPC URN <-> GS1 Digital Link URI/WebURI)
- Generation of EPCIS Event HashID
- Validation of uploaded XML/JSON-LD EPCIS files against normative EPCIS 2.0 artefacts (i.e., XSD, JSON Schema, JSON Context)
